Stronger Together - A Message from Board President, Rob Cassetti

I am pleased to announce that the consolidation of Museumwise and the Museum Association of New York is now complete. A new board has been elected that represents a diverse cross-section of museums, and museum professionals, from across New York State. The board includes strong representation from our former organizations.

Our first act was to agree on a name for our new, united organization. The vote was unanimous: we will be the Museum Association of New York.

The name is clear and describes who we are. The name also has remarkable equity and recognition at a state and national level. We don't need to spend money and time creating awareness for a new brand.

We did feel that we could do a better job of clarifying what we do by dividing our services into three simple categories. The names we have chosen for these categories describe our primary activities - and also reflect the strengths of our shared past:

- One Voice - advocacy and strategy
- Museumwise - training and resources
- Conversations - conferences and seminars

Our goal, moving forward, is to bring the spirit, vitality and individuality of our former organizations into a new, united organization. We will continue to meet your expectations with a full range of programs and services,big and small. We will evaluate how to better accomplish what we do and how we do it, to assure that we are effectively delivering the service and advocacy you need.

This is an exciting new chapter in our 60 year history. We have much work to do in the months ahead, including the implementation of a new, united website. Rest assured, our mission will remain constant: to serve you, to advocate for you, and to provide the tools you need to succeed. Together, working with you and serving you, we can all be stronger.

Please let us know how we are doing along the way.
On behalf of the board and staff, welcome to the new Museum Association of New York.

Rob Cassetti
President, Museum Association of New York

A New Face at the MANY Office
We are pleased to announce the addition of Dana L. Krueger as Associate Director, Programs for the Museum Association of New York! Dana has a long history with Museumwise as she served on the Board of Directors since 2007. In this capacity, she was also a part of the consolidation effort and therefore understands and appreciates the new organization and all is has to offer. Dana has stepped down from her role on the Board to take the position. Some of her previous work includes roles as Registrar at the Emerson Gallery/Wellin Museum of Art, Hamilton College; Collections Manager at the Madison County Historical Society; after-school instructor at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts and The Old Forge Arts Center (now The View). Dana is also an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Program in Museum Studies at Syracuse University where she teaches Public Learning in Museums.

Thank you to all of our Board members who were asked to work overtime during the consolidation process in 2012. We truly appreciate all of your hard work!

On April 15, 2013 we said goodbye to the following members as they step down from the Board of Directors:
Michael Botwinick, Hudson River Museum; Christine Campeau, Adirondack Museum; Christopher Clarke, Historian and Consultant; Scot Medbury, Brooklyn Botanic Garden; Kristin A. Swain, Rockwell Museum of Western Art; and Sally Treanor, Consultant. Our thanks goes out to each of them for their dedication and passion in their time on the Board.

Also on the 15th, we welcomed in our 1st official Board of Directors for the new Museum Association of New York! We welcomed our returning and new members of the Board: Gonzalo Casals, El Museo del Barrio; Robert Cassetti (President), Corning Museum of Glass; Melissa Chiu, The Asia Society; Hillarie Logan-Dechene, The Wild Center; Rebecca Gideon, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Pamela Green, Weeksville Heritage Center; Jennifer Haines, Genesee County Village & Museum; John Haworth, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian's George Gustav Heye Center; Lenora Henson, Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site; Steven Kern (Treasurer), Everson Museum of Art; Suzanne LeBlanc, Long Island Children's Museum; Beth Levinthal, Hofstra University Museum; Mark Mortenson, Buffalo Museum of Science; Michele Philips, Peebles Island Resource Center; Erin Richardson (Vice President), The Fenimore Art Museum/NYSHA and The Farmers' Museum; Bart Roselli, Seneca Park Zoo; Lauren Sodano (Secretary), The Strong; Gretchen Sullivan Sorin, Cooperstown Graduate Program.

A special thank you goes out to John Haworth and Michele Philips as they step down from their roles as President and Vice President. Their leadership and ardor was crucial to the consolidation and keeping us on track!

Advocacy

Albany

There will be a NYS Tourism Strategic Planning Session on Friday, May 17 at Destiny USA in Syracuse, NY. Pre-registration required.

Catherine spent a day at the Governor's Tourism Summit in Albany. There was much talk about the value of cross-sector regional collaboration; devising strategies to drive visitors "upstate"; and fostering dialogues with the various contributors to tourism to better understand one another's capacities, capabilities and expectations. New York's museums and heritage organizations are a key segment in the state's "cornucopia" of tourism assets!

We have defined a challenge for New York State's museum community to work together to clearly convey what the State's museums, heritage organizations, zoos, botanical gardens and aquariums do; your value and your impact. We applaud those who have taken the lead and invite others to take the initiative; welcome the invitation; and come to the table during regional and statewide discussions and planning sessions for educational initiatives, economic development and tourism initiatives.  We want to be - and need to be - an active part of the educational, economic development, and tourism conversations taking place at every level in our state.

Read the press release outlining the launch of the Governor's $60m campaign to support tourism.

Washington update:

Record Support in Congress for Museum Funding
Museum champions in Congress are once again leading the effort to support funding for the Office of Museum Services (OMS) at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). In recent weeks, a record 95 Representatives and 24 Senators signed letters in support of robust funding for OMS. These letters are used to determine which programs have support within Congress and are influential when annual spending bills are being written.
In addition to in-person requests at Museums Advocacy Day, this effort was made possible by the nearly 2,000 contacts that legislators received from their constituents, urging them to sign on. Thank you to everyone who took action!
"With record support in the House and Senate for Office of Museum Services funding, museum advocates are building momentum in Congress," said Alliance President Ford W. Bell. "These legislators have stepped up publicly to support our cause, so it is absolutely critical that we let them know we're watching and we're grateful."

Sign AAM's Pledge of Excellence!
The Pledge of Excellence campaign is off to a great start! So far, 1,299 museums have signed the Pledge of Excellence. The collective goal is to get 2,000 museums nationwide to sign the Pledge by May 20. New York State currently has 74 museums.

Please help drive New York's numbers up by signing the Pledge on behalf of your museum and/or urging colleagues at other museums to do so.

The Pledge of Excellence is a one-step, no-cost way to show that your museum is committed to standards and best practices. It also sends a clear message to elected and government officials that museums and their staff are dedicated to their educational mission, serving their communities and meeting the highest professional standards.

This is the museum field'sPledge of Excellence-we can all use it for advocacy purposes and show that for a field that is not regulated, we are highly effective at self-regulation.

Sign the Pledge of Excellence now! Taking the Pledge is voluntary, free and available to all museums. The Pledge operates on the honor system. Contact Julie Hart at AAM with questions or for more information.

On May 20 at the AAM Annual Meeting, all participating museums will be announced. I hope we can include your institution!

Asian Lacquer International Symposium, SUNY Buffalo State
The Asian Lacquer International Symposium will be held on the campus of SUNY Buffalo State in Buffalo, New York, May 20-24 2013. This weeklong symposium will bring together international lacquer experts from multiple disciplines, including artists, art historians, conservators, curators, and scientists, to gain a holistic view of the many facets of Asian lacquerware. The symposium will:

* highlight lacquer as a living art;
* feature historical examples of lacquerware by region and culture;
* explore technical aspects of the craft through history;
* discuss cultural differences in conservation approaches;
* provide a venue for dissemination of recent scientific findings.

Distinguished guests with extensive lacquer experience from China, Japan, and Korea will make oral presentations and demonstrations.

The concomitant Asian lacquer exhibition at the Burchfield Penney Art Center will express the idea that the past and present can be woven into the design process to create art that melds time-honored traditional techniques and materials with new processes, ideas, and changes in contemporary Asian society, thereby
showing that this traditional technique is a vibrant and evolving art form.

This conference is for artists, artisans, furniture designers, woodworkers, conservators, scientists, curators, collectors, students of these disciplines, and those curious about or interested in the wonders of Asian lacquer.
Those interested in attending are invited to read more about the symposium at
http://artconservation.buffalostate.edu/asianlacquer2013. We recommend that you check the site periodically for updates and new information.

Register via the American Institute for Conservation website:http://www.conservation-us.org/courses and scroll down to Asian Lacquer Symposium.
