Circuit Rider program through the Connecting to New York's Collections

Over 50 organizations have requested a

Circuit Rider site visit -

Have you requested yours yet?

Sign Up for a Face-to-Face Assessment of Your Site!  The Circuit Rider program is currently being offered through the Connecting to New York's Collections administered by Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN), which is funded through a generous 'Connecting to Collections' Implementation Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Fall of 2014.

What is a Circuit Rider?  Historically, the term referred to the clergy in the earliest years of the United States who were assigned to travel around specific geographic territories to minister to settlers and organize congregations. Our "Circuit Riders" are a team of statewide independent trained professionals in the field of collection management and conservation who will come to you!

How does the CR program benefit my Institution?

The Circuit Rider program is tailored to meet the needs of individual sites and offers an opportunity for site staff and board members to meet personally with the Circuit Rider in an informal, supportive, and consultative setting. Circuit Riders help small collecting institutions develop preliminary strategies for improving collections care by identifying and prioritizing actions you can practicably take to implement improvements. The program will also help provide templates and identify resources you can use to draft basic collections policies, forms, and procedures for adoption and implementation. Information obtained from the Circuit Rider visit may be used as support materials for the American Association of Museum's Collections Stewardship Assessment Program (CSMAP), GHHN's Conservation Treatment Grant,  the Heritage Preservation's Conservation Assessment Program (CAP), and the Museum Assessment Program (CAP).

How does it work?  Contact GHHN to request a site visit. The Circuit Rider will come to your organization for a half-day site visit focusing on a topic that is determined in advance. The site visits are available to historic house museums, historic sites, historical societies, libraries, and archives - any site that has collections. Circuit Riders will discuss various areas of stewardship with you, help identify your specific collections issues, suggest and prioritize basic steps to improve care of your collections, review your existing documents and forms, provide you with templates, and suggest site-specific resources. You can request multiple site visits as long as each visit is on a different collection issue. Best of all, the program is completely FREE to participants until October 2014.

Museum Association of New York Appoints Executive Director

Museum Association of New York Appoints Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the Museum Association of New York is pleased to announce Devin Lander as the organization’s new Executive Director, effective June 2, 2014. Devin brings years of legislative and advocacy work built on a foundation of museum and cultural heritage experience.
“I am honored by the opportunity afforded me by the Board to lead our state’s Museum Association,” Lander said. “New York State is home to one of the world’s greatest and most diverse collection of museums, historical sites, zoos, botanical gardens, and aquariums. These institutions of optimism provide world-class education and are major economic drivers for the entire state. I am excited to continue, and expand upon, MANY’s important mission; to support and grow the capacity of the museum industry, provide assistance to museum professionals, volunteers, and board members, and ensure that the vital educational mission of our museums is sustainable and able to flourish well into the future.”
Devin joins MANY after six years with the New York State Assembly as Deputy Legislative Director for Assemblyman Steve Englebright. During his time in the Legislature, Devin worked as the Committee Clerk for both the Assembly Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development and the Committee on Governmental Affairs. Devin also acted as the Staff Director for the Historic Hudson-Hoosic Rivers Partnership, a public-benefit corporation created by the NYS Legislature to preserve, enhance, and develop the historic, agricultural, scenic, natural, and recreational resources and the waterways within the Northern Hudson River region. Through the tradition of municipal home rule, the Partnership fosters collaborative projects with non-profit and governmental entities with an emphasis on agricultural and open space protection, economic and tourism development, and the protection and interpretation of our natural and cultural heritage.
Before joining Assemblyman Englebright’s staff, Devin worked as an archivist at the State University of New York at Albany’s Department of Special Collections and Archives and a contract consultant for the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s Bureau of Historic Sites. A published historian specializing in post-World War II social and cultural movements, Devin holds a B.A. in American History from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and a M.A. in Public History from the University at Albany and is a lifetime member of Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society.
Joining Devin in MANY’s Troy, New York office as Associate Director is Dana Krueger. Dana has many years of experience with the organization, serving as MANY’s Associate Director for Programs for the past year and formerly as a board member of Museumwise, participating throughout its consolidation process with MANY. Previously she held positions as Registrar for the Emerson Gallery at Hamilton College and as the Collections Manager at the Madison County Historical Society. Dana received her M.A. in Museum Studies as well as her M.S. in Art Education from Syracuse University. She earned a B.A. in Studio Art at St. Lawrence University. Dana also currently serves as an adjunct faculty member in Syracuse University’s Museum Studies program.
Catherine Gilbert will transition out of the Association to pursue new opportunities. Catherine began with the organization in 2008 as Director of Museumwise and continued as director of MANY after the 2012 consolidation of the two organizations.

Support Tourism... Pump Up the State's Economy
Tourism Action Day 2014

MANY is a partner in the Tourism Industry Coalition who is sponsoring the day's events. We will hear about the issues facing the tourism industry (which includes Museums!) and then make our rounds, visiting the Legislators to lend our voices to the cause.

Come and tell your elected officials you need their continued support both statewide and at the local level. If you would like to attend and be a part of the action, register here by Thursday, February 27, 2014.

Gallery design, basic didactic implantations, and an exploration of how you can create dynamic gallery elements using new technologies yourself, will be discussed. TRUsing Dialogue to Promote Engagement & Enhance Relevance Among Museum Visitors Workshop
When: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 9:00am - 5:00pm

Where: Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site - Buffalo, New York

About:
This full-day, hands-on training session provides an introduction to facilitated dialogue. This interpretive technique allows museums to better connect with their visitors and engage in conversations about critical issues. It has been used with great success at museums like the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.

Led by: Sarah Pharaon, Program Director at the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. Participants will explore what makes dialogue such an effective tool in museum settings. Case studies, coupled with participatory activities and discussion, will demonstrate how facilitated dialogue techniques can be used successfully with audiences of all ages and various learning styles. Participants will leave with a "toolkit" of proven strategies they can take home and put into practice at their organizations.

Who Should Attend: This session is perfect for staff and dedicated volunteers from museums that would like to engage with their visitors in a more active and meaningful way, but aren't sure where/how to start. Facilitated dialogue training will not only benefit museum educators, tour guides, and staff responsible for public programming, but also museum studies students.
